Hip & knee reconstruction · JIS Orthopedics fellowship
Neel Patel, M.D.
A board-certified orthopedic surgeon focused on primary and revision hip and knee reconstruction, with the decision kept yours.

Making the decision clearer.
Dr. Patel recommends hip or knee replacement when the diagnosis, symptoms, examination, imaging, and your goals support it. The aim is better function; results and recovery differ by patient, and strength, sleep, nutrition, and daily habits all shape them.
You do not need to be ready for surgery to schedule an evaluation. The first step is clarifying the diagnosis and whether an operation is medically reasonable; whether and when to proceed stays your decision. Weight, age, and activity level inform candidacy; on their own they do not decide it.
Hip and knee care offered.
Anatomy, diagnosis, prior surgery, and overall health narrow the options; your goals and timeline shape the rest. When more than one approach is reasonable, Dr. Patel explains the differences: incision location, surgical exposure, stability considerations, and how prior surgery or anatomy affects the choice. You can also decide “not yet.”
Hip
Total hip replacement by anterior, posterior, or lateral approach, chosen to fit your anatomy; the anterior approach includes a bikini-incision variant, a lower incision that follows the natural skin crease. Revision surgery for hips that need a second operation.
Knee
Total knee replacement, partial knee replacement when arthritis stays in one compartment, revision surgery, and arthroscopy, keyhole surgery with a small camera, for selected non-arthritic problems.
Technology
For selected operations, Mako robotic assistance helps with implant planning and positioning, and Dr. Patel also uses computer navigation and augmented-reality guidance systems. These tools support surgical judgment; they do not automate the operation or guarantee a result.
Setting
Outpatient and same-day pathways for selected primary hip and knee patients. Candidacy depends on your health, mobility, and support at home, and is decided before surgery rather than on the day. When staying overnight is the safer choice, that is what happens.
The path to hip and knee reconstruction.
From Rutgers to an adult hip and knee reconstruction fellowship at JIS Orthopedics in Ohio. A fellowship in adult reconstruction is an extra year spent only on these two joints, including the revision operations done when a previous replacement needs to be redone.

Research and publications.
Dr. Patel has contributed to peer-reviewed orthopedic research, including a textbook chapter on lateral unicompartmental knee arthroplasty and published studies in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the Journal of Orthopaedic Research.
The laboratory papers date from his research years at Columbia and the Hospital for Special Surgery. They are contributions to orthopedic science rather than evidence about his own surgical results.
